Arabica vs Robusta: understanding coffee beans 101

2 Mins read

With over 150 million bags produced every year globally, coffee happens to be one of the world’s most loved beverages. But there is more to this drink than just Starbucks. So here is your guide to understanding coffee beans. Most of the coffee beans produced around the world can be divided into two categories, Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica beans:

Arabica beans were initially native to Yemen, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. However, they are now produced all around the world. Arabica beans account for 60% of the total coffee made around the world. The beans are oval in shape. They are also believed to be the first species of coffee that was cultivated and considered as higher quality beans. These beans have a lighter, fruitier taste and a floral aroma. Arabica beans have high aroma retention due to the fact they have 60% than Robusta beans. Generally, it is more expensive than Robusta because it is much more delicate and needs more specific cultivation care, such as weather and altitude, to grow. As these beans are considered as superior quality, hence these are used in all types of coffee drinks and desserts.

Robusta beans:

India happens to be one of the world’s top robusta producers. These beans have a more strong smell and bitter flavour and are often used for expressos. Robusta is known to have more of a roasted taste to it. The reason for this might be that Robusta beans contain more caffeine than Arabica beans. The beans tend to have a more circular shape. Robusta beans have twenty-five to eighty per cent higher chlorogenic acid than the average Arabica beans. CGA is excellent for reducing inflammation. CGA helps with joint pain, skin issues, weight loss, and even preventing diabetes. Robusta beans are generally used as blends along with robusta beans. People who prefer more of a roasted and bitter taste tend to go for a complete robusta blend. Robusta contains more Acrylamide. Acrylamide is a type of chemical that forms in food items during high-temperature cooking processes. Acrylamide forms through sugars and an amino acid that is naturally present in food. It also does not come from food packaging or the environment.
