10 varieties of Indian mangoes

Mangoes have always been a welcome and essential part of Indian culture. Our country is best known for its tropical mango hotspots, which promise delectable flavours and aromas. Here are ten varieties of Indian mangoes.

  1. Alphonso Mangoes, which are available from mid-July to mid-August, are renowned worldwide for their bright yellow appearance and delicious taste. Ratnagiri and its surrounding areas in Maharashtra are known as one of the best and most exclusive mango hotspots globally, famous for their Alphonso mangoes.
  2. Kesar: The colour of the pulp, which is one of the most costly varieties, is similar to saffron, the spice it’s named after. It is primarily grown in the Ahmedabad and Gujarat areas. The most distinguishing characteristic is that it smells like Kesar.
  3. Dasheri:  The mango belt of North India is well-known in Lucknow and its surrounding cities. Dashehari mangoes grown here are easily distinguished from other varieties of mangoes in India by their green peels and wholesome taste, which are available from mid-May to late August.
  4. Hapus: This variety is native to Maharashtra, but it is now cultivated in Gujarat and Karnataka. According to research, this is the most costly variety, which is also exported to other countries.
  5. Badami: Mangoes from the Badami variety are famous in Karnataka’s northern region. Badami is also known as the Karnataka-Alphonso in the surrounding areas, which speaks to their delectable taste. From May to July, they are typically open.
  6. Banganpali: Banganpali, also known as Benishan Mango, is a popular fruit in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in Banganpalle town, as its name suggests. This fruit is sometimes referred to as the “King of Mangoes” in South India because it is significantly larger than other types of mangoes commonly sold in the market during the middle of the season and weighs between 350 and 400 grammes on average. This Mango is known to be rich in Vitamin A and C, so it is good for health.
  7. Langra: Varanasi is known for its Langra variety of mangoes and is a popular destination for mango lovers in India. Locals tell the storey of a farmer who grew this mango variety. Banarasi Langra mangoes are known for their lemon-yellow skin tone and equally delicious taste and are available from June to July.
  8. Raspuri: This variety is known as the Queen of Mangoes in India because it is widely grown and consumed in Old Mysuru, Karnataka. It will arrive in May and will be available by the end of June. It’s best eaten as yoghurt, smoothie, or jam.
  9. Totapuri: Bangalore, India’s electronic capital, is renowned for its Totapuri mangoes, also known as Bangalora or Sandersha mangoes. Mango lovers will delight in the city’s medium-sized greenish-yellow mangoes! Totapuri mangoes are available from May to July.
  10. Amrapali Mangoes are a hybrid variety that was first introduced in 1971. Amrapali is a cross between Dasheri and Neelam mangoes that is grown in farms and orchards across India. It is known for its deep red flesh when fully ripe but has a poor shelf life when compared to other commercial mango varieties.
